OASIS AND MANICS SIGN UP FOR NME WAR CHILD LP (da NME)
OASIS, STEREOPHONICS, MANIC STREET PREACHERS, BADLY DRAWN BOY and STARSAILOR are among artists who are entering studios around the world to record special cover versions for the forthcoming NME/WAR CHILD charity album, '1 LOVE'.
The album, which is released in October on B-Unique via WEA, celebrates NME's 50th birthday and the anniversary of the world's first ever singles chart, which was launched in NME in 1952. Proceeds from sales of the album will go to War Child, the organisation which, for the last 10 years, has been actively providing aid to children whose lives have been devastated by war.
In 1995, War Child released the hugely successful 'HELP' album which raised the charity's profile for all the work it did during the Bosnian crisis. Acts who donated their time and music included Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Massive Attack, Radiohead and Blur. Each band recorded and delivered their song on the same day, and the album was released one week later. The album went on to raise 1.25 million pounds for the cause.
NME's Editorial Director Steve Sutherland said : "What we have here is a great combination of celebrations. NME is 50 this year, the chart was launched the year NME was founded and NME worked alongside Warchild to raise publicity for the original 'Help' album. So when it came to discussions about how we should mark our anniversary, we pretty quickly decided that, with the world in the state its in, we wanted to create something both useful and historic.
"With that in mind, we are delighted to announce news of the '1 Love' project with the full expectation that it will storm the charts and provide War Child with greater profile and, of course, vital funds. The idea is that today's top artists record a brand new version of one of their favourite number one hits of all time and, with literally hundreds of tracks to choose from, we fully anticipate that '1 Love' will be a truly extraordinary and landmark album.
"The calibre of artists already signed up is incredible and more acts are calling up to join in every day. In the last 24 hours, Basement Jaxx, Feeder, Ms Dynamite and Jimmy Eat World have all joined the project and there are some other real stunners in the pipeline."
The project is being executive produced by Spike Stent who is famous for his work with Madonna and Oasis among others. In order to hit our deadlines, all recordings must be delivered to Spike by the first week of September so there's still time for NME.COM readers to get involved. What we'd like you to do is e-mail us your top pick for '1 Love'. All we need is your name, age, address and which artist you'd like to see on the album covering which number one single from the last 50 years. Who knows? You may just get your dream track onto an album and help War child to rebuild the lives of innocent kids in war torn territories all over the world. Send your e-mails to news@nme.com.
NME will be providing weekly updates on the '1 Love' project and next week we will reveal more details of those participating and some of their stunning choices of cover versions.
