Notícias atualizadas... ao que parece, os dois pilotos passam bem.
SURFERS PARADISE, Australia--The Honda Indy 300 has been temporarily halted following a multiple-car accident at the start. The race, Round 17 of the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series, started under rainy conditions and a number of cars in the middle of the pack tangled as the green flag dropped.
Involved in the accident were the cars of Michael Andretti, Christian Fittipaldi, Jimmy Vasser, Michel Jourdain Jr., Adrian Fernandez, Tora Takagi, Patrick Carpentier, Alex Tagliani and Mario Dominguez. The cars of Vasser, Takagi and Tagliani all got upside-down.
The accident apparently started when the cars of Vasser and Fernandez tangled. As the following cars slowed up to avoid the incident, the cars from back rows became involved.
The red flag came out immediately, halting the race.
Vasser was able to get out his upside-down car and actually did a live television interview.
Fernandez was taken to CART Medical Center and waved to fans. Takagi, the last driver to be removed from his stricken car.
Dr. Steve Olvey, CART's medical director, said that Takagi "had some pain in his pelvis and might have suffered a pelvic fracture. It's not serious. He will be transported to the hospital for precautionary X-rays. (Fernandez) had pain in the back of his neck. He will also be transported to the hospital for precautionary X-rays. There is no sign of serious injury. Both are doing well."
At this time, crews of the cars involved are preparing the backup machines in anticipation of a restart.
